CO2 insufflation in flexible endoscopy offers a wide range of clinical advantages, both for users in private practice as well as for full-service hospitals.

The feeling of bloating during and after colonoscopies is distinctly reduced due to the 120-times faster resorption of CO2 in the intestinal lumen. Pain is significantly reduced and the examination is more pleasant and better tolerated. This means that the use of CO2 can help to increase the acceptance of colonoscopy screenings and offer added value to patients. A further advantage is the reduction in the duration of the examination as a result of both improved circulation, due to CO2 relaxing the bowel, and resorption of insufflated gas through the intestinal wall.

Pain is also reduced in lengthy procedures, such as ERCP or ESD, due to the use of carbon dioxide, which results in a reduced need for sedatives. A further advantage is the deeper intubation of the small intestine in double-balloon enteroscopy.

With the new GW-1, Fujinon is introducing a CO2 insufflator with extremely simple single-button operation to the market. The integrated pressure control and differing diameters of the pressure hoses ensure correct flow rates at all times. The standard accessories also include a special gas/water valve, which prevents the release of carbon dioxide into the ambient air. This enables the GW-1 to help save costs during operation, as up to 60% less CO2 is used during the examination.
